Ureparapara is an extinct volcano. The island has an unusual shape with steep headlands at the entrance to a spectacular 3km long harbour, formed by a breached crater.
The volcano was built up through successive pyroclastic eruptions and lava flows.
Two traditional languages are spoken on Ureparapara Island.
Lehalurup (150 speakers), and Lehali (200 speakers).
